In 2007, a Californian, Jerome James, stole the bright green from a nature reserve in Fiji. He then smuggled them onto a flight to Florida.
Arriving in the USA, he passed through passport control. But as he was walking through customs at the airport, one of the officers noticed something strange about his walk.
‘Could you please take your leg off, sir?’
‘How dare you?’ said Mr James.
‘Your leg, sir,’ insisted the customs officer.
Mr James tried to run. He did not get far. The customs officers found the lizards. They were hidden in a special compartment in his prosthetic leg.
